Language FAQ

1. What do I need to enter Mexico?

You will need either a passport or the original copy of your birth certificate.

2. Where do I fly into?
You should book your flight all the way through to Veracruz on Continental. There is a direct flight from Houston to Veracruz, bypassing Mexico City.
Check with your local travel agency for details. VISTAS will can arrange transportation from the airport (75 minutes from town) if you let us know your flight number and time of arrival.

3. What should I bring?
The weather is variable yet mild so bring comfortable light-weight clothes with a sweater or other light wrap for the evenings. You will be walking on cobblestone streets so good walking shoes are essential. You may want to bring a bathing suit and sunscreen. Don't forget a notebook, pencil, dictionary, and an individual reading light. During the summer months bring bug repellent since it is the rainy season and mosquitoes are present.

4. What about the electricity?
The electricity is the same as in the US.

5. Is there Internet access?
There are "cyber cafes" all over town where you can send and receive emails. The cost is minimal, always less than $1 per hour!

6. What about the water?
Veracruz experiences a sufficient number of tourists that all the restaurants are accustomed to disinfecting the vegetables and lettuce and use purified water for the ice. You should exercise caution if you eat from stands on the street or in "economic" restaurants where you might want to use caution.

7. How about University credit?
You may receive up to 12 quarter units of academic credit through California State University, Hayward, Continuing Education for an additional fee of $32 per unit. These units are fully transferable and are available through the Department of Teacher Education. It is suggested that you contact CSU Hayward before leaving for Mexico to sign up for and pay the tuition. The CSU Website has the necessary registration information.

8. Where can I learn more about Xalapa and Coatepec?
You will find interesting facts about the wonderful State of Veracruz on www.planeta.com

9. What do I do with the visa paper I receive as I enter Mexico?
Keep it in a safe place because you will need to turn it in as you leave the country.
