VISTAS Tours of Oaxaca : Introduction
Oaxaca is a paradise where strollers will delight in discovering traditional
Mexico at its best.
The colonial town of Oaxaca, with its rich history, physical beauty,
artistic legacy and temperate year-round climate is the ideal location
for your immersion experience in Mexico. Our knowledgeable guides
will give you a multi-faceted perspective on the history, culture, and
art of the area to serve as a foundation for understanding some of the
social and political dimensions of contemporary Mexico. This program
is designed to encourage learning through immersion into the culture.
Lecture presentations by native historians, artists, and specialists
on various aspects of Mexican culture set the stage for excursions and
field trips.
Colonial history comes alive by visits to historic sites. The extraordinary
vitality of the well-preserved art and architecture of the region will
be explored along with the ancient traditions of the artisans. You will
visit indigenous artisan workshops, colonial homes and regional craft
centers. The powerful religious history of the area will be viewed by
visits to the major extant churches in the area. Woven throughout the
days will be time to celebrate the colonial ambiance with traditional
music and cuisine, and socializing.

Oaxaca is renowned as Mexico's home to one of the largest concentrations
of indigenous communities. Most people are descended from the Zapotec
and Mixtec civilizations that flourished hundreds of years before the
Spanish conquest of Mexico. Its rich cultural tradition is unsurpassed.
This has allowed it to retain a feeling of grandeur, grace, and historical
authenticity. While wandering the broad streets and viewing the grand
churches and houses, the visitor is immersed in a sense of history,
particularly that of the 18th century leading up to the Mexican Revolution.
Your tour program will include walking tours of Oaxaca, presentations,
trips to the pyramid sites of Monte Alban and Mitla, visits to nearby
artisan villages, and cathedrals. There will also be special Mexican
music and culinary demonstrations.
Participants should be able to walk and physically withstand the high
altitude of Oaxaca (5700 ft).
